Problems on homology manifolds

چکیده

In these notes “homology manifold” means ENR (Euclidean neighborhood retract) Z–coefficient homology manifold, unless otherwise specified, and “exotic” means not a manifold factor (ie local or “Quinn” index 6= 1. We use the multiplicative version of the local index, taking values in 1+8Z). In the last decade exotic homology manifolds have been shown to exist and quite a bit of structure theory has been developed. However they have not yet appeared in other areas of mathematics. The first groups of questions suggest ways this might happen. Later questions are more internal to the subject.

Seiberg – Witten – Floer stable homotopy type of three - manifolds with b 1 = 0

Using Furuta’s idea of finite dimensional approximation in Seiberg–Witten theory, we refine Seiberg–Witten Floer homology to obtain an invariant of homology 3–spheres which lives in the S1–equivariant graded suspension category. In particular, this gives a construction of Seiberg–Witten Floer homology that avoids the delicate transversality problems in the standard approach. We also define a re...

On Surgery for 4-manifolds and Splitting of 5-manifolds

Under certain homological hypotheses on a compact 4-manifold, we prove exactness of the topological surgery sequence at the stably smoothable normal invariants. This technical result allows an extension of Cappell’s 5-dimensional splitting theorem. As an application, we analyze, up to internal s-cobordism, the splitting and fibering problems for certain 5-manifolds mapping to the circle. For ex...

Casson–type Invariants in Dimension Four Daniel Ruberman and Nikolai Saveliev

This article surveys our ongoing project about the relationship between invariants extending the classical Rohlin invariant of homology spheres and those coming from 4–dimensional (Yang-Mills) gauge theory; it will appear in the Proceedings of the Fields-McMaster Conference on Geometry and Topology of Manifolds. We are mainly concerned with a special class of manifolds for which the two types o...

The Bing-borsuk and the Busemann Conjectures

We present two classical conjectures concerning the characterization of manifolds: the Bing Borsuk Conjecture asserts that every n-dimensional homogeneous ANR is a topological n-manifold, whereas the Busemann Conjecture asserts that every n-dimensional G-space is a topological n-manifold. The key object in both cases are so-called generalized manifolds, i.e. ENR homology manifolds. We look at t...
